Building South Carolina's physician workforce

Building South Carolina’s physician workforce.

The SCMA Graduate Medical Education Consortium

All South Carolinians, regardless of where they live, should have access to high-quality medical care. In partnership with the South Carolina Medical Association, we created the SCMA Graduate Medical Education Consortium — an accredited residency program working with hospitals and healthcare partners across the state.

The consortium is designed to train, prepare and retain family medicine physicians equipped to serve South Carolina’s rural and underserved communities — creating a sustainable physician pipeline for the areas that need it most.

The ideas behind the mission

UNBALANCED: The Evolving Medical Care Crisis

For decades, conversations about healthcare reform have focused primarily on population health, cost and access. But another crisis threatens the foundation of medicine: a medical care system in which patient well-being is no longer always the primary objective.

Written by Spence M. Taylor, M.D. and Jerry Youkey, M.D., UNBALANCED examines the forces that have disrupted the physician-patient relationship and presents a case for restoring balance to medical care.
